Residential vs Datacenter Proxies for Web Scraping: When Each Type Wins

Teams shopping for scraping infrastructure often start with one question: residential or datacenter? The answer is not “always residential”—it depends on what you scrape, how often you request, and what happens when a block occurs.

What changes on the target side

Modern sites rarely block a single IP forever. They score signals: ASN type, request rate, TLS fingerprint, header consistency, session behavior, and historical abuse from the same subnet. Residential IPs appear as consumer ISP allocations; datacenter IPs appear as hosting or cloud networks. Retail, social, and travel sites often weight ASN heavily because datacenter traffic correlates with bots.

That does not mean datacenter is “bad.” Internal APIs, staging environments, partner portals, and many B2B SaaS dashboards are hosted on cloud ASNs and expect server traffic. Scraping those with datacenter egress can be normal and stable.

When residential is the rational choice

JoyProxy’s short-term residential proxies rotate automatically and bill by traffic—useful when each job needs a fresh household path. For workflows that must keep the same identity for weeks, see long-term dedicated IPs instead of forcing rotation.

When datacenter (or no proxy) may suffice

Practical recommendation

Prototype on the smallest package that matches the target’s expectations. If you see HTTP 403 clusters, empty JSON, or escalating CAPTCHAs within minutes, ASN mismatch is a likely cause—residential rotation usually fixes that faster than tuning request headers alone.

JoyProxy sells residential proxy IP (short-term, long-term, and custom geo). We do not offer datacenter-only pools; this article explains when our product category fits your scraping plan.
